Song of the Day: “The Guillotine” by The Coup

Out today is the new album ‘Sorry To Bother You’ by The Coup. I had the pleasure to listen to it in its entirety, and I must say that this is the best album I’ve heard this year. Boots Riley and gang have created a masterpiece that is a throwback to an era of funk infused hip hop. It’s so easy to find yourself replaying the album over and over as the songs have a contagious groove that will easily become anthems. With that said we are very happy to say the “The Guillotine” by The Coup is the Voodoo Song of the Day.

The Coup: Boots Riley – Vocals, Pam The Funkstress: Vocals, Silk-E: Vocals, B’nai Rebelfront – Guitar, J.J. Jungle – Bass, Hassan Hurd – Drums, LJ – Keys

Hometown: Oakland, CA

Genre: Hip Hop/Funk/Soul/Rap

Label: Epitaph

The Surf Spot Music Venue is Making Waves

The Surf Spot Music Venue has only been opened for three months but it has already created a buzz in the Bay Area music scene. The Surf Spot sits in the little coastal town of Pacifica, CA, 10 miles south of San Francisco. This unique outdoor venue has been described as a mini-Shoreline Amphitheater with its lawn seating and grassy hills. The general admission patio area can 200. Along with two cabanas and add in the lawn area, the Surf Spot can hold over 500 people. Shows at the Surf Spot are intimate and that has made things very special.

What is being noticed most about the venue is the lineup of bands that have played and are scheduled to play. Joey Ganoza, the Booking Manager, told us his plan was to make the Surf Spot primarily an original music venue. He wants to showcase emerging Bay Area musicians. He wants the Surf Spot to be a venue where you will be seeing the next big acts in music. Along with local artists the Surf Spot is booking many out of state and out of the country bands on tour.

The Surf Spot is an all ages venue and the majority of the time the shows are free. They have three bars opened during shows along with their Cabana Kitchen. The food is great and they usually have drinks specials during shows. We highly recommend you catch a show at the Surf Spot as we believe it will become a major Bay Area music venue.

The Surf Spot’s First Annual Indian Summer Concert Series (3 days) kicks off October 6 and concludes October 20th. A total of 14 bands will be showcased. Mark your calendars now as the lineups are amazing.

* Indian Summer Concert Day 1, Oct. 6, Noon-6pm: Carter Rollins, Dangermaker, Hello Monster, and The Thirstbusters

* Indian Summer Concert Day 2, Oct 13, Noon-8pm: New Diplomat, Beta State, Picture Atlantic, Girl Named T, Spanish Cannons, and The Rubber Duckies

* Indian Summer Concert Day 3, Oct. 2o, 1pm-7pm: Alma Desnuda, Dom Liberati, Emily Rath, and John Vicino

Bands looking to book at the Surf Spot can email Joey Ganoza at music@surfspoteats.com

Just some of the band that have played Surf Spot: Kiyoshi Foster, Animal Party, Lara Johnston, A B & The Sea, Young Science, Solwave, Thirstbusters, Ash Reiter, The Jugtown Pirates, Vandella, Sioux City Kid, Finish Ticket, Koruscant Weekend, The Honey Wilders, Matt Masih and The Messengers, The Release, Whogas, State Line Empire, Parachute On Fire, The Seacats…

Music Artist of the Week: Solwave

Solwave: Joe Collins – Lead Singer/Keyboards, Danny Ferdon – Bass/Backing Vocals, Tommy Ferdon – Lead Guitar/Backing Vocals, Moise Seri – Drums/Percussion

Hometown: San Francisco, CA

Genre: Rock

Label: N/A

The first time I heard Solwave I thought to myself these rockers have some serious soul. Their music is lively and quickly energizes you to get up and dance. With a style reminiscent to the Killers and the Muse, Solwave is making their mark with a well crafted blend of  pop, funk, rock and electronica that will captivate you immediately. This San Francisco band is definitely on the right path to success. I had the pleasure to sit down with the gang and talk about some exciting things on the horizon.

Joey: Hey fellas thanks for hanging out! Quickly introduce yourselves and tell us where you’re from?

Tommy: We’re Solwave, a young strapping rock n’ roll band from the City and County of San Francisco, Joe, Danny, and I all born and raised in SF baby. Moise came to SF from the Ivory Coast, West Africa when he was ten, but is an honorary City boy.

Joey: The past six months have been really good to you guys. Your music, Out of Mayhem EP, is being extremely well received and your playing shows up and down California. Did you expect for things to take off so quickly? [Read more...]
